Story

I grew up in the only neighboring house to the Moose Mountain Ski Lodge, Etna, NH. In the 70s it was bought by Kay and Peter Shumway. I was around 15 then, and Kay hired me to help in the kitchen. I worked there until I went off to RISD. Kay was a second mom to me. Not only did she teach me to bake bread and scramble eggs (though she wasn’t a fan of the parsley I added), she taught me to spin wool and knit sweaters. I still don’t know how she had time to be a proprietor and do all these creative things. Fate would have Kay move to Sedgwick, Maine, near my place on Peggy’s Island. I visited her in the fall of 2024, and we went for a seaside walk with her West Highland Terrier, Lucy, who has a favorite rock she needs to be the queen of. I had to paint that.
