Story

This is a Kumamoto oyster (crassostrea sikamea). They are native to Japan, and their shells are beautifully sculpted with nearly black edges.

In keeping with the “named after hurricanes” theme, these Kumamoto paintings are named after a Western North Pacific and South China Sea Typhoon. Haikui is a Chinese name meaning “A kind of submarine animal whose appearance likes sunflower”. (something might be lost in translation).

I saved these shells from dinner at Eventide Oyster Company in Portland, Maine.
