Story

This is a Kumamoto oyster (crassostrea sikamea). They are native to Japan, and their shells are beautifully sculpted with nearly black edges.

In keeping with the “named after hurricanes” theme, these Kumamoto paintings are named after a Western North Pacific and South China Sea Typhoon. Damery is a Cambodian name that means Elephant.

Many moons ago, I saved these Kumamoto shells from dinner at Eventide Oyster Company in Portland, Maine.
