International Congress for Conservation Biology – presentation

Redesigning a PowerPoint presentation given by John Coon to the International Congress for Conservation Biology, Montpellier, France.

Backstory

John (the lawyer from the John Coon Law website project) had been working on this presentation for a while, trying to distill years of insights into a presentation that would motivate the audience to approach problems differently. He spent so much time getting it down to the right points on the right number of slides, he didn’t have time to make it look nice. He asked if I’d take a crack. Of course, he was leaving for France tomorrow.

John used what he could, clip art, to make the points more visual and inviting. My goal was to remove the generic and mixed styles of the clip art and come up with something just as friendly but classy. Here’s the “before.”

Before

I created a set of images to illustrate the various points on the slide so they would be visually consistent – as opposed to the clip art which came with many different styles. I cropped and framed any maps, graphs, or photos that were actually part of the presentation so they would all be consistent and well placed. I sent him the final (below) as he was en route to France.

After

Notes to self

Always pull an all-nighter for good people and good causes.
