Bold – Color bar – Sections in FIC Green – secondary color purple (or other depending on the palette)
Graphic devices
Abstract or symbolic images could be used – in small amounts and with meaning. To avoid clutter, putting them on a fixed plane as a background would be a nice way to break up a page section.
Maps
There are tools to create abstract and simple maps from google maps. These could be desaturated and used in the background as it scrolls by if there are sections devoted to a particular part of the world.
Symbols
Representational or non-representational images could be used throughout or as overlays and underlays.

Woodblocks
Woodblocks are graphic and stylized. Customized prints for main topic areas might be worth trying. Otherwise, it’s too labor intensive for regularly changing graphics.
Graphic devices as background scroll-by elements
Blocks of text can scroll over a fixed background to make the separation stronger and less busy. Background images may have a topical relevance – like Sudan map for publications from Sudan.
