Cultivar

Automation systems to monitor and control lawn and garden conditions.

Logo and app interface prototype

Backstory

Cultivar is a startup targeting a lawn and garden niche with web-based, smartphone accessed products supporting an application platform and agricultural database.

The Logo

I wanted to emphasize growth in the logo. I’m not a farmer but I’ve raised a few tomatos from seeds. After staring at the tray of dirt for days, it’s a powerful moment when the seedlings first emerge. They look a little weird, the leaves are asymmetrical and don’t resemble the shape of the final leaves – that all seems to go away as the plant straightens up and starts producing real-looking leaves. I wanted the logo to capture that moment and trigger some low brainstem delight farmers have when their seeds show up to tell them they might have money in the bank this year.

The spiral is a powerful image, logo-wise it has a lot of visual bang for the buck. I try to use it judiciously — here it references the cycle of life.

The Interface – UX/UI

I worked with the engineer and app developer to convert a geeky spreadsheet dashboard into a less geeky mobile device interface.

Notes to self

The leaves that sprout first actually have a name: seed leaves, or even better, cotyledons.
